The Leeuwin Current is an unexpected current because it carries water from the tropics to southwestern
Australia and then eastward, possibly as far as Tasmania. In some places and at some times
it has speeds up to 3.5 knots, thereby rivalling the East Australian Current. This paper outlines some
of its features.
