It is suggested that the origin of harriers
Circus spp. was in the southern hemisphere
and not in the north as has been previously proposed. Data are presented to show that
Spotted Harriers
Circus assimilis were probably once ground-nesters like other harriers
and that they have subsequently become more aboreal.
