THE 20 MINUTE SEARCH – A SIMPLE METHOD FOR COUNTING FOREST BIRDS

A simple method is proposed for estimating relative abundances of forest birds. An
unmarked area of about 3 ha is searched for 20 minutes and all birds seen or heard are
counted. The method has been used widely in Victoria and its scope and limitations are
discussed.
