The plumage development of the Little Pied Cormorant Microcarbo melanoleucos in Western Australia is documented from hatchling to fledgling over a period of 60 days. The transition from hatchling to fledgling progresses rapidly. Key plumage features become visible during the nestling period, such as the white rim on the leading edge of the wing, a white thigh plume, white ear tuft, the shedding of down and changes in the bill colouration. All assist in determining the age of Little Pied Cormorant nestlings. Information was collected regarding the duration of the breeding season and habitat preferences of Little Pied Cormorants in south-west Western Australia.
