A founder and father of the Bird Banders’ Association of Australia, the late S. G. (Bill) Lane and his contribution to bird study in Australia
S. G. (Bill) Lane had two areas of interest that filled his studious life, the army and birds. His drive and energy and meticulous eye for detail ensured he excelled in whatever he undertook. He retired from the Citizens Military Force (CMF) with a rank of Colonel in 1972, which emphasises the scale of his achievement. His achievements in ornithology are at least as great and in my view put him as one of the all time greats as an amateur ornithologist in the history of Australia.
